Evolution: ev·o·lu·tion-The gradual development of something, esp. from a simple to a more complex form.
As artists, we often find ourselves in a rut struggling to fall in love with our work. The desire to "be perfect" and create an amazing image within a strict set of rules can quickly suppress creativity, and the only resolution is to forget the restrictions and try something completely out of your comfort zone.
Each time we are willing to toss the guidelines aside and push our boundaries a little bit one thing is certain, we evolve. No matter if we "fail" or "succeed" by industry standards we start to learn more about ourselves: what we like, what we don't like, what leaves us breathless, and what leaves us disgusted.
Recently, I hated everything I was creating, so much so I thought about quitting. I realized I could never quit. I have to create art with everything in me. I could never walk away, so I ignored all the rules and took off to the woods with a camera, myself, a few models, and material. I sought to remember why I fell in love with photography to begin with.
This is only a piece of breaking the rules. I can't wait to share the rest in the days to come.
It's going to take some time to nail it down, and by the time I do I'll probably be on to something else. This is only a part of my evolution as an artist as artists perpetually "evolve". In the months to follow I hope to delve further into self discovery and evolution and integrate it into my photography and art.
What's your "rule breaking" success story?
